Healthy Tips for Kids Exams

“EXAMS” read the word and most parents will get nervous. Either because their kids get too nervous in the name of exams or because no matter what the exam their kids don’t care! Getting kids to study or deal with exams in a healthy manner is a matter of both art and science. It might sound like a difficult subject to deal with, but it’s not rocket science. Kids are rather simple beings and are to be dealt with so.

Given the fact that the exam season is close on the horizon, we have come up with a few healthy tips for kids to deal with exams in a positive manner.

  1. Eat light: Kids are usually required to study at a stretch for exams. It is important for the body to be able to support these long hours for the kids to be able to focus on studying. Keep meals light, nutritious and healthy. Heavy meals make kids lethargic and sleepy due to all the energy being used for digesting the heavy meal. It is advisable to have smaller portions of food every 1.5-2 hours to keep their energy levels optimal. Hydration is another important thing that must be taken care of.
  2. Break it up: The human mind cannot stay focused for more than an hour and a half at a stretch and that too adults. Kids should be taking a 5-10 minute break every 1 hour or so to keep their minds focused and retain what they have studied. It’s best to plan the study so that it’s easier to deal and cope with in the given time.
  3. Sleep over it: No matter what time of the year, 8 hours of sleep at a single stretch is a must for kids. The mind and body require it to stay healthy and function optimally. It’s usually best to sleep and wake up early coordinating study times with the body’s natural cycles. Interrupting these cycles lead to the body and mind going out of sync.
  4. Relax the stress: Stress causes cortisol levels in the body to rise and disrupt the body’s natural functioning. Relaxing both before and after studying is a must to grasp and retain everything that is studied. Make it a point to get kids in the habit of relaxing with a few deep breaths before and after they study. Deep breathing is known to sharpen the mind and make it more alert.
  5. Exercise: Light exercise helps keep the body and mind awake and alert. Make it a point that kids get some form of light exercise and open air during the exams, it helps deal with exam stress and to venting out.

Exams no matter how big or important are not an accurate measure of a child’s capabilities. Exams only tell you how much a particular child knows about a certain subject at the said point of time. Nothing less and nothing more and should be treated so!
