How to Find the Best Mosquito Repellent

Mosquito repellents are usually not payed much heed to till the time you have a child. Once you do it becomes important in a tropical country like ours to find a suitable repellent to keep the children safe from the disease carrying stingers. Here are things to consider when buying one:

Natural v/s Chemical:

The scientific communities across the world usually recommend mosquito repellents like DEET and picaridin etc to keep mosquitoes away. While the experts across the world favor the chemical repellents, there is no denying the fact that they have their side effects that cannot be overlooked in the long run. Then come the natural repellents like essential oils of citronella, eucalyptus, germanium, neem, lavender, lemongrass, etc that are known to work well as mosquito repellents. The natural repellents usually do not have any lasting or dangerous side effects other than possible allergies or sensitivity to certain ingredients which can easily be checked and treated.

The effectiveness of the chemical repellents is usually considered higher as compared to the natural counter parts. The effectiveness refers to the time period for which the repellent stays effective to keep mosquitoes away. Natural repellents usually require more frequent application as compared to its counterpart. Both types repellents when used on the skin in form of lotions and creams tend to be washed away with sweat and water, thus requiring frequent reapplication. Different types of repellents prove to be effective in different situation. So when considering buying repellents make sure the situation in which it is going to be used is a major variable.

Side effects:

Chemical repellents by default have many side effects that are usually unwanted in the long run. Additionally, while they are good at keeping mosquitoes away, they tend to be harmful to the environment there by polluting it. Mosquitoes tend to become resistant to the chemical repellents over time and so they need to be evolving constantly to be effective, thereby making it more poisonous for the mosquitoes. Natural repellents on the other hand do not have the problem of mosquitoes becoming immune to it. Side effects usually include sensitivity and allergic reactions to one of the ingredients. One should check the ingredients and if the children are sensitive or allergic to any of them before using the repellent.

Pricing should be the last factor when considering buying mosquito repellents for kids. Though the last factor, it is an important one to consider. One should consider what kind of product safety and effectiveness one is getting for a certain price point. One should also consider how long a certain product will last when used every day as required. The very cheap repellents are usually the ones made with subpar ingredients and have the maximum side effects. Spending too much may not guarantee effective and safe products either. Each product is an individual case for consideration depending on how much priority mosquito protection takes in your books.

Which repellent is the best for your child is a question that only you can answer based on your preferences and beliefs. The one that works best for you while fitting in your budget is the best repellent for your child.
