How to Get Rid of a Mosquito Bite

The telltale redness, swelling and itching of a mosquito bite are things that most of us are all too familiar with. But what most of us do not know is that the itching and swelling are not caused so much due to the mosquito bite as much due to the body’s reaction to the bite. As adults most of us are already desensitised to mosquito bites, but when it comes to kids, the reactions can vary form mild to a really annoying itch. Kids can get very agitated due to the pain and itching caused due to the bite. The best way to avoid it is to use the best mosquito repellent that you can get your hands on. If your child still falls prey to the nasty mosquito bites for some reason, here are some simple home remedies, tips and tricks to help soothe and relieve it.

1. Wash with soap and water: Once you realise that your child has had a mosquito bite, immediately wash it with soap and water. Once washed and dried, use rubbing alcohol on the bite to dry it out. Drying out the bite helps relieve the itch from the bite.

2. Rubbing witch hazel: The witch hazel plant is known to have anti itch and anti inflammation properties in addition to being an astringent. Rubbing witch hazel on the bite helps provide relief from the itch.

3. Using under arm deodorant: The deodorants contain aluminium chloride which is known to provide relief from pain and swelling caused due to mosquito bites.

4. Applying calamine lotion: Calamine lotion contains zinc oxide and ferric oxide which are know to help relieve itching associated with mosquito bites.

5. Using a banana peel: The enzymes on the inside of a ripe banana help dry out the mosquito bite providing relief from the itching and  swelling. One should rub the inside of the banana peel on the skin on and around the mosquito bite to relieve it.

6. Using lemon: Rub a slice of lemon on the bite or squirt some juice n the bite. Citric acid in the lemon has itch relieving properties.

7. Apple cider vinegar: Place a cotton ball soaked in apple cider vinegar on the bite for a few minutes to alleviate the pain. Alternatively a paste of apple cider vinegar and flour can be used. Apply the paste, let it dry and then wash it off with warm water.

8. Baking soda: Apply a paste of baking soda and water, let it dry and wash it to ease off the itching.

9. Sanitiser: Applying a little sanitiser on the bite will help sooth the itch in addition to clearing of the remnants of the mosquito saliva causing the itch.

10. Ice: The cold temperature numbs the bitten area providing temporary relief from the inflammation and itch.

While these remedies are available and effective, mosquito bites can potentially make your child fall sick with  the likes of  dengue, malaria and chickungunya etc. When it comes to kids, natural mosquito repellents are best to keep them safe from the nasty mosquitoes and their even nastier bites.
