A-Z Of Mosquito Repellents: Natural V/s Chemical

Ah monsoon! A time for kids to slide into their colourful crocs and enjoy all that nature has to offer. Blue skies, white clouds, rain drops, fresh air, unique smell of soil and…mosquitoes of course!

You can’t go around running in the park killing mosquitoes to keep the little ones safe. That's where mosquito repellents come into play. The repellents make it difficult for the mosquitoes to locate the kids.

While searching for the right mosquito repellent, you may have come across products labelled as natural mosquito repellents. Here comes the question as to what are natural mosquito repellents and how they differ from the chemical ones?

What is better—Nature or nature!

1.    The main difference between chemical and natural mosquito repellents are the active ingredients used to repel mosquitoes.
2.    Chemical mosquito repellents use the likes of DEET as the main active ingredient, while natural mosquito repellents use natural ingredients such as essential oils of lemon eucalyptus, spearmint, geranium, cedar, peppermint, soybean, citronella and lemongrass, etc.
3.    While natural mosquito repellents are safe to use most of the time, chemical repellents need to be evaluated for safety and effectiveness first.
4.    DEET is the gold standard of mosquito repellents. Widely used across the globe and known to cause harm to the brain and  nervous system. In children, the most frequently reported symptoms of DEET toxicity are lethargic behaviour, headaches, tremors, involuntary movements, seizures and convulsions.
5.    Chemical repellents are cheaper and effective in the short run, in the longer run however, they prove to be damaging to both the users and the environment.
6.    Chemical repellents no matter in what form sprays, gels, liquids etc come in direct contact with children causing damage and side effects everywhere they reach.

While there is an array of reasons why natural repellents should be best preferred, our two main reasons for recommending the same are that they are safe for the little ones and for the world that we will leave behind for them.

We are doing our bit to leave behind a greener healthier planet, are you doing yours?
